The shoulder of the slope from contour lines 40 m to 50 m, between the narrow gorge immediately south of the rock sanctuary and the small pea east of the presumed harbour inlet of Coressus, is fortified along approximately 300 m of its length by wall, 2.40 m thick. This has often been incorrectly identified as part of the Lysimachian city wall on the basis of superficial similarities in construction technique.Differences in detail are many, however, the most important being the lack of reinforcing towers. The only known passageway through it is situated directly above the Zeus/Meter shrine. The wall, in fact, defended the archaic settlement of Koressos, founded by Androclus and later besieged by king Croesus, who forced the inhabitants to move to a new city near the Artemision.
